FAQ

Can I use pine pellets in this box, or is it only for clumping litter?

This model is designed for pine pellets. The sifting pan lets used sawdust fall through into the base while the whole pellets stay on top, so you shake out the dust and keep the good pellets. If you use clumping clay litter, choose our Clumping Sifting model instead — the slot sizes are tuned differently.

How does the pine sifting system actually work?

It works by dry-wet separation. The pellets soak up urine and break down into sawdust, while the clean pellets stay dry on the sifting screen. Shake the box and the dissolved litter drops through the screen into the liner in the base pan, leaving the good pellets on top — so you never re-scoop the whole box.

How deep should the pine pellets be?

About 1.5–2 inches is enough. Pine works by absorbing and drying rather than clumping, so a deep bed is not needed — too much depth just means more to sift through. Top up as the level drops rather than replacing the whole box.

How often do I change it, and what do I throw away?

Scoop the poop daily, then shake the box so the dissolved litter drops into the base. Replace the liner bag in the base every 2 weeks and throw away the dissolved litter with it. The clean pellets stay in the box, so you only top up the pellets rather than replacing them.

Why pine pellets instead of clumping clay?

Ammonia odor comes mostly from urine, and pine pellets absorb it instantly — pine litter reduces up to 95.6% of odor by soaking up the liquid and breaking it down, instead of leaving a damp layer in the box. It also tracks far less than clay and creates no dust cloud when your cat digs.

How much time and litter does the pine system save?

Two ways. Time: scooping the poop is a few seconds a day, because the pellets absorb the urine themselves — you never scoop the wet litter. Litter: the clean pellets stay in the box and only the dissolved litter leaves with the liner, so you top up pellets instead of replacing the whole box every couple of weeks.

Which style should I choose for pine — open-top, semi-enclosed, or fully enclosed?

Pine is popular for its low tracking, so many owners pair it with the open-top box — 22.8 in long, 16.1 in wide, 7.7 in high — and let the pellets do the work. Choose semi-enclosed if your cat digs hard and kicks pellets out, and fully enclosed if your cat wants privacy or sprays over the edge.

My cat pees over the side. Will a covered pine box help?

Yes. A high-sided or fully enclosed pine box contains both the spray and the pellets. If your cat sprays backwards, top-entry is the most effective style. Just make sure the box is long enough that your cat can still turn around inside the enclosure.

Can I switch my cat from clumping clay to pine pellets?

Yes, and it is easier than most people expect. Mix a small amount of pine into the existing litter and increase the ratio over 7–10 days. Keep the box in the same place and scoop as usual — most cats accept pine within a week or two.

How do I clean a stainless steel pine box?

Because the dissolved litter collects in the base liner, day-to-day cleaning is mostly just changing that liner. Wipe the screen and base with mild soap and warm water as needed — avoid pine-scented or oily cleaners, as cats are sensitive to strong scents. The non-porous steel does not hold sawdust stains or odor.

Is the pine sifting box big enough for a large cat?

Our pine sifting boxes come in XL and XXL. The XL base is 22.8 in long and 16.1 in wide — comfortable for most adult cats. If your cat is over about 15 lb, or is a large breed, choose XXL so it can turn around without touching the walls.
