FAQ

How do I choose between open-top, semi-enclosed, fully enclosed, and the Greenscape style?

Start with your cat's temperament, then the mess you are trying to stop. Open-top suits confident cats and is the easiest to clean. Semi-enclosed adds a half-lid for cats that like some cover. Fully enclosed is for cats that want real privacy or spray over the edge. Greenscape is the same enclosure quality with a planter top — pick it if you want the box to read as furniture.

My cat is a senior or has arthritis — which style is easiest for it?

A low front entry with an open or semi-enclosed top. Stepping over a high wall or jumping through a roof hatch is the hardest part for an older cat. If yours has started avoiding the box, switching from a covered box to a low-sided open box often fixes it on its own.

I have a large cat. What should I look for?

Length first. Your cat needs to turn around without touching the sides, so look for at least 1.5× its body length — usually XL or XXL. Then pick the style: an open-top XXL gives the most usable floor space, while a fully enclosed XXL needs a wider interior to feel the same.

Will a covered box make litter tracking worse or better?

Better, if the box is the right size. A lid stops litter flying out when your cat digs and gives the mat a place to catch what falls off the paws. Tracking gets worse when the box is too small, because your cat has to dig harder to find a clean spot.

Why choose stainless steel instead of plastic?

Plastic is porous: it absorbs urine over time, and the scratches left by claws become places for bacteria to sit — which is why plastic boxes start to smell even after washing. Stainless steel is non-porous and does not scratch the same way, so it does not hold odor and lasts years rather than seasons.

Will the stainless steel rust from cat urine?

No. Our boxes use 304 stainless steel, which resists the acids in urine. The white rings or rainbow film people notice are dried mineral deposits from water and urine, not rust — a vinegar or citric-acid wipe removes them. Orange-brown pitting would be rust, and is not expected in normal use.

How do I clean it, and how often?

Scoop daily and wipe with mild soap and warm water; do a full wash every 2–4 weeks. Avoid bleach, abrasive pads and steel wool — they dull the finish without cleaning any better. Because the surface does not hold odor, a full wash is quick rather than a scrubbing job.

Won't the steel feel cold for my cat?

In practice, no. Litter is an insulator and cats spend their time on the litter rather than on the bare metal. The steel also warms to room temperature quickly — it is the same surface cats happily use in stainless steel feeding bowls.

What do I save by choosing stainless steel instead of plastic?

Two things. Money over time — a stainless steel box lasts years rather than the season or two a plastic tray survives, so you buy once instead of repeatedly. And cleaning time — the non-porous surface does not absorb urine, so there is no odor to scrub out and a full wash takes a couple of minutes rather than a deep-clean session.

What size box does my cat need?

Measure your cat from nose to the base of the tail and aim for a box at least 1.5× that length. Our XL is 22.8 in long, 16.1 in wide and 7.7 in high with an interior depth of 6.3 in; the semi-enclosed version is 11.8 in high, and the fully enclosed 17 in high with an 11.2 × 8.6 in door. When in doubt, size up — cats prefer a box they can turn around in.

How many litter boxes should I have?

One per cat plus one — so two cats means three boxes, ideally in different rooms. If you cannot fit three, keep at least one per cat and place them apart: two boxes side by side are treated as one.
